9 Aussie Ways To Celebrate Australia Day

The Australia Day national holiday is celebrated by Australians (or “Aussies” for short) nationwide on the 26th of January every year. It’s a time to celebrate all things Australian such as our cuisine, easy-going nature, relaxed summertime lifestyle and favourite pastimes. It’s also a time to acknowledge our people and history.

So what do most Australians do on Australia Day? No matter if you’re from overseas and curious about our national holiday, or a local looking for some fun ways to enjoy this special day, below are a few Aussie-inspired activities you can enjoy to celebrate Australians everywhere.

1. Enjoy A Barbeque

“Throw some shrimp on the barbie” as they say while enjoying a cold drink in a stubby cooler. Nothing is more Australian than gathering around a barbeque meal in the summertime.

Whether it’s at a park where you can BYO food or a party hosted in someone’s backyard, you’ll often find a sausage sizzle, lamb cuts, steaks, kebabs or even chicken wings cooking on the barbeque at many Australia Day celebrations.

2. Play Backyard Cricket

Almost like the traditional sport of cricket enjoyed the world over, backyard cricket has more flexible rules making it ideal for just about anyone to participate – both young and old.

The beauty of backyard cricket is that it can be played just about anywhere with very little equipment. All you need is a bat, a ball and a wicket. And if you don’t happen to have any of the necessary equipment, simply improvise with any ball, an object to hit the ball with and a rubbish bin or chalk markings on a fence for the wicket.

3. Go To The Beach

For many of us, Australia Day means sun, surf and sand. Spending the day at the local beach is a great way to catch some waves, relax with friends and have a cool dip in the ocean.

4. Have A Get-together

No matter if it’s a small, casual catch-up or a big event, spending time with friends and family during Australia Day is a must! Gather around a sit-down meal, some chip-and-dip snacks or even a picnic at the park and throw on some tunes. For those who want the full Australia Day experience, why not decorate your space with some Australia Day balloons and flags.

5. Eat Some Aussie Food

Sampling a selection of traditional Australian foods is a great way to celebrate Australia Day or introduce friends from other countries to our culinary favourites. Serve up some meat pies with tomato sauce, lamingtons, avocado (avo) or vegemite on toast or a bacon and egg roll. You can also serve up an Aussie burger (similar to a regular burger) with two bonus ingredients: beetroot and pineapple.

6. Grab Some Mates For A Game Of Footy

Get a group of your best friends together for some football (a.k.a. “footy”, and not to be confused with soccer) at the park. With football being a much-loved Aussie sport, there’s always lots of fun to be had with a friendly Australia Day game.

7. Watch The Fireworks

If you’re free in the evening, why not head on over to your local Australia Day fireworks event and watch the sky light up with dazzling light displays.

8. Keep Cool At Home

Had enough of the summer heat and sweating in your clothes all day? There are so many ways to cool off at home on Australia Day. From running across the sprinklers with your kids to eating fruit-flavoured ice blocks or maybe having a water balloon fight.

9. Wear Your Aussie Merch

No Australia Day is complete without kitschy Australia Day merchandise. Put on your printed hat, thongs or t-shirt and grab your flag or towel and get ready to celebrate. For a bit of fun, you can always play a game of “who is the most Aussie?” and award a prize for the best dressed.
